The inaugural Miss Afro UK 2006 pageant themed ‘Africa Arise’ is an opportunity for African women

MISS AFRO UK 2006 PRESS RELEASE

The inaugural Miss Afro UK pageant is to be held at the historic Leeds Royal Armouries on 30th of September 2006. The event is expected to be an annual feature event on the entertainment calendar and will parade African women in the Diaspora. Rich in intellectual, social and cultural substance, thisl andmark event is a perfect medium for women of African ancestry to gain life experiences and contribute to issues of importance in Africa. This is indeed anopportunity for African women to recognise the potential of their beauty and talent.

The pageant which has the theme ‘Africa Arise’ seeks to promote the African Renaissance through showcasing African culture which we hope would be achieved by bringing together and facilitating interactions between Africans in the UK irrespective of whether they are of North, West, South, Central or East African origin.

There is a belief by the organisers that this pageant will grow to be one of themost recognised in the region and possibly expand to other countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia. To achieve that goal the organisers have teamed up with various sponsors such as Sistaz Inc, Moneygram, VirginActive, The Zimbabwaen and many more to come up with an attractive prize package for the winners in all the (6) categories  which include among others, entry into the mISS iNTER-CONTINENTAL WORLD, cash, Holidays and beauty hampers.

On the humanitarian front, the organisers have teamed up with PLAN INTERNATIONAL UK, a charity organisation which runs projects throughout Africa. This collaboration will see a portion from ticket sales being donated to PLAN and the winner of the pageant will also be available as a PLAN ambassador  whose role will be to support and initiate fundraising programmes throughout their one year tenure.

To cap off a fantastic evening there is a host of African groups, poets and traditional dancers lined up to provide the entertainment for the over 500 people that are expected to attend the function.
