African Chess Championship

Egypt win the African Individual Chess Championship, whilst Botswana win the women`s division

African Individual Championships 2005 was held between 4 and 15 November 2005 in Lusaka, Zambia.

Malawi added a new face to African chess in this years African Individual Championships, whilst absent from the competition were Morocco's GM Hichem Hamdouchi, players from West Africa's powerhouse Nigeria and players from both Uganda and Kenya.

Twenty-one year old WIM Marany Meyer was the lone woman in the open section while fifteen women battled for the women's continental crown.

In the end, GM Ahmet Adly of Egypt won the African Individual Championship 2005 alone with 7 points. GM Slim Belkhodja of Tunisia and FM Ali Frhat of Egypt and Stanley Chumfwa of Zambia tied for second with 6.5 points each.

Tuduetso Sabure (BOT) won the women`s division with 7 points followed by WM S. Busta (EGY) and WM Denise Frick (RSA) with 6.5 points each.

Stats Open section: 10 federations; 35 players (2 GMs, 9 IMs, 3 FMs, 1 WIM)
Stats women's section: 6 federations; 15 players (3 WIMs, 1 WCM)

The top six finishers qualify for the 2005 World Cup starting early December in Elista, Russia.
