The Comoros which gained independence in 1975 comprises four islands, Geographically but politically it comprises three. They lie north-west of the northern tip of Madagascar, and about the same distance from the Mozambican coast.
The largest island is Grande Comore (also called Njazidja), followed by Anjouan, Mayotte and Moheli. All are mountainous.
The climate is tropical, and regular cyclones occur which can cause extensive damage. It is potentially a holiday paradise with picture-postcard beaches. |
